when to Harvest Fall planted Garlic

Postby Chelsea » Mon May 04, 2015 11:07 am

My daughter and I bought a lots of garlic cloves last september so she planted hers at her house and I planted mine in various gardens here. I didnt want them all in one place just in case they didnt like where I put them. Must have a couple dozen or more nice looking plants right now. :) Love my garlic

When do i harvest them? The month of June or wait until they form the scapes?

Thank you for any help. I want to do it the right way.

Wait until the tops die back..usually mid to late summer.

I generally dig mine up when they have died down too. I have tried harvesting the young scapes, but haven't been entirely successful getting them young enough. Mine are at least 6-8 inches tall right now. I have just given them a handful of fertilizer to boost them after their long winter haul.

You will need to cut the scapes soon after they form and then wait for most of the leaves to yellow before you dig up the bulbs. Should be ready to harvest about mid-summer.
Make sure you give the freshly dug bulbs a little time to cure in a dry airy place before you try to trim and clean for storage.

When I moved here, I planted lots of rosebushes...and then, planted garlic in a ring around each one. The garlic grew well over a foot and a half high, and I waited and waited, and finally in late fall I dug a few up...skinny bulbs...with greens smelling very garlicky. The rest stayed in place forever, and every year they grew the same way...with the same results. now they've been overtaken by various small lilies and irises.

I really have an impressive list of garden failures!

Might give elephant garlic a go this year...maybe.
